The lazy, hazy days of summer are here. If you want to stay out of the heat but escape the endless whines of “I’m boooored,” you’re not alone. Forney offers a ton for families to do all summer long. Here are our picks for passing the time, whether you want to stay in the A/C, maximize family togetherness, get away from the kids, or take in the great outdoors.
Go Antiquing
The Texas Legislature has dubbed Forney the “Antique Capital of Texas,” and for good reason. So pack a cooler, grab a friend, and spend the day hopping from antique store to antique store. Some of our picks include:

Get Bouncing
If your kids are bouncing off the walls, put that energy to good use at an indoor playground. Head to Aim High Indoor Bounce of Forney to wear out the kids just in time for a nap. Or arrange to meet a friend at Play Q Studio, which caters to kids of every age, even babies.
Head to the Gentle Zoo
If your kids love animals, bigger zoos might feel like a daunting undertaking—especially in the midsummer heat, or if your kids have special needs. The Gentle Zoo offers a lower key experience, including a sensory tour tailored to kids on the autism spectrum. Check out the petting zoo, picnic under one of the pavilions, and don’t forget to play on the playground.
Listen to Music in the Park
There’s still time to enjoy Music in the Park. During June and May, the City of Forney sponsors free family-friendly movies and musical performances at the Spellman Amphitheater. When Music in the Park wraps up, make your own music. Grab a guitar, harmonica, or even a kazoo and pack a picnic. Then plan a family singalong in one of Forney’s many parks.
Celebrate Independence Day
There are plenty of great ways to celebrate Independence Day this year, from festivals to cookouts, and including plenty of large fireworks displays. Not sure what to do? Check out the City of Forney’s Independence Day celebration. A family favorite, this gathering features food trucks, kid-friendly activities, a massive fireworks display, live entertainment, face painting, and a shuttle to and from the festivities.
Go Camping
Every child deserves at least one childhood memory of roasted marshmallows, bickering inside a tent, raccoon raids, and campfire songs. Try camping together as a family. If pitching a tent and fighting mosquitoes aren’t for you, you can still enjoy the great outdoors. Check out a glamping site for pre-designed campgrounds and just a sliver of rugged life.
Gateway Park is proud to host a wide range of family-friendly events year-round. And of course, there’s no substitute for our lush pool. So stop by the amenity center for a quick diversion or a day of high-energy family fun.
